Google October 2021 Update: Google introduced a new term, title link, for the title of a search result on Google Search and to help clarify the difference between a title link in search results versus a <title> element on a web page.

Title Link: is the title that shows up in search engines and links to a web page. It is the hyperlink that searchers will click on. Title Links DO NOT appear on the ACTUAL WEBPAGE!

Title Element / H1 Tags: This is what users see on the web page. H1 Tags usually DO NOT appear in SEARCH ENGINES!

It’s important to use high-quality text in your “Title Links” as title links are critical in giving users a quick insight in deciding which result to click on.

Google uses a number of different sources to automatically determine the title link.

Best practices for writing descriptive <title> elements

• Create unique <title> elements for each page.

• Accurately describe the page’s content.

• Avoid keyword
